Eucalyptus seedlings growing like crazy.

Earlier this winter I sowed a lot of Eucalyptus sp. Some that I have collected myself and some that I bought. Also some seeds from a nerd friend in the USA. All from very good provenances. Some are growing fast and some are still in the fridge. The problem that I had was that some of the old seeds germinated well better than I thought. So it´s thight in the pots were they were sown. Also some of the other seeds I got were very fresh so they also germinated extremly well.

The sowing mixture contains: 40% Brittish lake gravel, 40% Perlite, 10% Swedish lake sand and 10% soil (Heatthreated).

The ones that´s in the fridge will be there 3, 4 or 6 weeks depending on species. Also testing alternative methods with temperatures, stratification etc.

Here are some of the species that are growing just now:

 Eucalyptus archeri.

Callistemon sp. From USA and there it has survived long temperatures.

 Eucalyptus camphora.

 Eucalyptus divaricata

 Eucalyptus neglecta.

 Eucalyptus parvula.

Eucalyptus praecox. Mother tree from USA.

Eucalyptus rodwayi. Mother tree from USA.

Eucalyptus urnigera.

Growing Eucalyptus in Sweden. Possible? Yes!

I started this blog to spread my knowledge about growing Eucalyptus species in cold Sweden.
Since 1981 I have experimented in growing Eucalyptus species outside here in Sweden. Not always successful but after some years I got several species to flower outside.

The highlight during my "Eucalyptus years" were when I in 1987 went to Australia to work as a seed collector with David Kleinig and Kevin Johnson. My first real job and with a legal work permit.

More about this in the weeks to come.

So all you nerds all over earth that love odd plants here is a blog for you. I know there are a few Eucalyptus nerds out there some where. I hope you will find this blog useful. Maybe you want to try to grow Eucalyptus sp in Budapest, Oslo, New York or in Kiruna? Well I hope this blog can give you inspiration, facts, info etc.

I now live in Norrköping. A mid size town on the Swedish east coast. I have started from scratch since I moved here and now grow my Eucalyptus species near Arkösund at my girlfriends summerplace. A nice spot with a lot of sun and a few hundred meters to the sea.

I still grow Eucalyptus sp on the island of Tjörn on the Swedish west coast were me and my brother has a house.

Welcome!

 Eucalyptus glaucescens the first year.

One of my favorite Eucalyptus species: E nitens.
Not so hardy but I will try to get it to survive!
Here the first year growing in Arkösund.

 Eucalyptus neglecta.

Eucalyptus parvula.

This is me back in 1988. On the summit of Mount Kosciuszko
in Australia. I am now older, not that thin and still the same nerd.

To be continued...
